Photonics by the Lake: Call for Abstracts


18th and 19th July 2018, Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa, Windermere, UK


This 2-day specialist conference on Photonics will take place in a unique location with stunning views over Lake Windermere at the heart of the UNESCO listed Lake District.

Bringing together scientists and engineers from across the world, this event offers an excellent opportunity for PhD students and early stage researchers to present their research findings to a specialist audience. The conference will look at recent progress and future trends in III-V Compound Semiconductor materials growth, device physics, design and characterisation of Photonics in the four following themes:

  • Photonics for Information & Communications
    Single photon sources, nano-emitters, quantum dot sources, etc.
  • Photonics for Security
    Infrared detectors, APDs & SPADs, quantum cryptography, infrared imaging, etc.
  • Photonics for Energy
    Multi-junction and concentrator solar cells, intermediate band cells, etc.
  • Photonics for Environment
    Mid-infrared sources & detectors, optical gas detection & chemical sensing, etc.

The conference concludes in style with dinner and a cruise across Lake Windermere on a traditional 1930's steamer.

The event is free of charge to PhD students and early stage researchers presenting a talk and provides an excellent opportunity for young researchers to present their research findings to a specialist audience alongside invited talks from leading keynote speakers (please note, delegates must pay their own travel and accommodation costs)

Please submit a 1 page abstract (including any figures) in pdf format to p.forster@lancaster.ac.uk before 5pm on Wednesday, 23rd March 2018. Please note that places to speak at this event are limited and likely to be in high demand. Therefore, we encourage you to apply as soon as possible.

Conference fees will be waived for speakers. However, any travel and accommodation costs will need to be covered separately.

Travelling to the Low Wood Bay Hotel in Windermere, Lake District

The Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa is situated in the north west of England. The address is Ambleside Road, Windermere, Cumbria, LA23 1LP. The hotel is set in a rural location but is easily accessible from many parts of the UK, including major airports.

Travel Details

By Air: The closest airport is Manchester. From there, you can get a train to Windermere with one change (Oxenholme Lake District) or two changes (Lancaster or Oxenholme Lake District). These trains take approximately 2.5 hours and times can be checked at www.thetrainline.com

The hotel is approximately 3 miles from Windermere train station and although there are buses, taking a taxi is recommended (around £10).

If you are flying to London Gatwick or Heathrow, there are regular trains from London Euston (please see the section below).

By Rail: Windermere is the closest train station to the hotel. Trains from London Euston take approximately 3.5 to 4.0 hours and most only involve one change at Oxenholme Lake District. For train times, please visit www.thetrainline.com

The hotel is approximately 3 miles from Windermere train station and although there are buses, taking a taxi is recommended (around £10).

By Taxi: Local taxi services can be contacted on +44 (0)15394 46777 and +44 (0)15394 48899. Taxis can also often be found outside of Windermere train station.

By Road: Car parking is available to the rear of the hotel. Travelling northbound, please use Junction 36 of the M6 and follow the A590 (A591) signposted Barrow and Kendal. After 3 miles you will see a roundabout, please continue straight on the A591 (signposted Windermere). This road will take you directly to the hotel which will be on your right hand side. Travelling southbound, please use junction 40 of the M6 and follow the A66 to Thelkeld. Please follow the B5322 to Thirlmere and turn left on to the A591. This road will take you through Ambleside and directly to the hotel which will be on your left hand side.

Please note: The Lake District is a very popular area for tourists and the A591, which passes the hotel, can be an extremely busy road. I suggest that extra time should be given to reach the hotel from the railway stations or motorways. All guests should use the new hotel entrance which is situated 100 meters north of the hotel on the A591.
