I have recently completed my undergrad studies at Lancaster in the Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology degree scheme and have just started in the Biomedical group. I find many areas of physics fascinating but am particularly interested in Biophysics. This interest arises from they need to use a broad range knowledge and skills to tackle biological systems. I am planning to work on improving the understanding of ion channels via modelling and simulating the passage of ions. These tiny structures have the mysterious property of being incredibly efficient in terms of moving a large number of ions and yet can be very selective about which ions they allow to permeate through. These channels are an essential component to the nervous system and many other biological functions making them important to everyday life. There is also a class of diseases “Channelopathies” which originate from malfunctions in these channels and so improving the overall understanding may lead to curing these diseases. In short ion channels are fundamental to life and yet not entirely understood and so I am choosing to investigate them.
