Project: ESR on Avalanche Photodiodes (APDs) with Ultra-thin Avalanche Region for Sensitive X-ray Detection

Lucas Pinel

Lucas is registered as a PhD student at the University of Sheffield and will carry out the majority of his research in the Electronic & Electrical Engineering Department, working on a new type of X-ray Avalanche Photodiodes containing InGaAs absorption layers and AlAsSb avalanche layers. The research will involve (i) device design, considering parameters such as photon absorption profile and avalanche gain, (ii) device fabrication to yield robust single-element device and arrays, and (iii) electrical and X-ray characterisation.

He will also work closely with University of Cadiz, University College Cork, NAsP, and Sgenia (with a number of secondment visits to these partners), to collaborate on TEM studies, time-resolved photoluminescence, and amplifier & signal processing techniques. Lucas will be supervised by Prof. Chee Hing Tan and Dr. Jo Shien Ng.

Lucas got an MEng in Physics and Nanosciences from Grenoble Institute of Technology, France and an MSc in Engineering Physics from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden.

As a PhD student at the University of Sheffield, he will be working on Avalanche Photodiodes for X-ray detection.
