| Travel |
Lancaster University is set in 250 acres of parkland and lies approximately 3.5 miles from the historic city of Lancaster. Its prime location, sandwiched between the Bowland hills, the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, allows for recreational opportunities for individuals and families and enhances quality of life. The campus is easily accessible by road and rail and is within 70 miles (100km) of both Liverpool and Manchester International Airports.
Taking the train to and from Lancaster:
Lancaster is on the main West Coast Rail Line. There are direct rail links between Lancaster and London, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and Oxford (amongst others). An express train to London takes less than 3 hours. There are many scenic journeys that one can take by train into the Lake District or the Yorkshire Dales.
The X1 bus service runs between the railway station and the University every 20 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays during the day, and hourly in the evening and on Sunday afternoons. The journey takes about 15 minutes. Alternatively, frequent services run from Common Garden Street which is a few minutes' walk from the train station.
Taxi services are available from the rail and bus stations. Taxi telephone numbers are (01524)-32090, -35666, -848848. Fares from the train station to campus are approximately 7 GBP.
Taking the bus around Lancaster:
The bus station is situated on Damside Street. Buses (numbers X1, 2, 2A, 3 and 4) leave regularly (every 4 minutes on weekdays) for the 20 minute journey to the University. All of these buses drop off at Lancaster University in the Underpass which lies beneath Alexandra Square in the centre of the campus. Buses also travel to Morecambe and surrounding villages, including into the Lake District.
Walking and Cycling
There is a bicycle/walking route (partly off-road) between Lancaster University and the City of Lancaster. The walk takes about one hour and a bicycle ride takes about 20 minutes. Lancaster is a "Cycling Demonstration City" and boasts several national/regional cycle routes, including a half-hour route from Lancaster to the Morecambe promenade that is entirely off-road.
