Physics of InAs quantum dot intermediate band solar cells

The intermediate band solar cell is a theoretical concept that predicts solar energy conversion efficiency up to 63% under ideal conditions. While this has never been achieved experimentally, current efforts are focused on exceeding the performance of a single junction solar cell. Here, we present results from an experimental prototype based on InAs quantum dots and show that the nanostructure of the quantum dots has a profound effect on the macroscopic device performance.
