End of Scaling? Challenges & Opportunities in Device Physics

While the difficulties of scaling Si based devices have been discussed for decades, new technologies have always successfully been developed to overcome that barriers to progress. Currently Si CMOS based LSIs are indispensable to modern ICT infrastructures, from mobile to cloud computing, and again, the end of scaling is being widely discussed. In this talk, I will introduce my personal experience in Hitachi for the developments of high-k gate dielectrics, strained Si, and double gate transistors with the emphasis on device physics relevant in nano-meter scales, i.e. various quantum mechanical effects. Then, I would like to discuss the future challenges and opportunities to enjoy emerging devices scaled down to the atomic level.
