Taxi

Taxi services are available from the rail and bus stations (taxi tel. numbers: 01524 32090, 01524 35666 or 01524 848848).

Fare from the station to the university is approximately  310 pounds and journey time is about 10-15 minutes.

Air

The closest major international airport to Lancaster University is Manchester International Airport.

From Manchester International Airport by car take the M56 motorway at junction 5 and join the M6 motorway at junction 20 (north); then follow the directions by car below. Journey time to the university from the airport by car or taxi is usually about an hour.

If taking a taxi from the airport to the university this should be pre-ordered so as not to be prohibitively expensive; contact us for further details (pre-ordered cost is about £ 120 return i.e. for the round trip).

Additionally there is an hourly direct train service from Manchester Airport to Lancaster; journey time about an hour and return ticket about £ 18. At the railway station in Lancaster there are both taxi and bus services to Lancaster University; journey time is 10-20 minutes.

An alternative but smaller airport is Liverpool John Lennon Airport but it does not have a railway station.

From Liverpool John Lennon Airport take the Airlink 501 bus to Liverpool South Parkway railway station from where there are 5 trains an hour to Liverpool Lime Street railway station. For Lancaster take the Blackpool train, changing at Wigan North Western for a mainline train stopping at Lancaster, total journey approximately 1 hour (timetables). Avoid travelling to Lancaster via Warrington as there is a walk between stations.

Rail

There are direct rail links between Lancaster and London, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Oxford and major cities in Scotland. See National Railway timetables and Lancaster station departures board.

The X1 bus service runs between the Railway Station and the University every 20 minutes Mon - Sat daytimes and hourly on Sunday afternoons and evenings.

Taxis are also available from outside the station.

Lancaster Railway Station is a 5 minute walk away from the city centre.

Bus

The bus station is situated on Damside Street. For bus information call 'Traveline' on 0871 200 22 33 or visit Stagecoach. Return fare from Lancaster city centre to the university is approximately £ 2.50 and journey time is about 20 minutes.

Buses (numbers X1, 2, 2A, 3 and 4) leave regularly (every 5 minutes on weekdays) for the 20 minute journey to the University. Buses also leave the city centre at Common Garden Street for the University. All buses drop off at the University underpass road in the centre of campus. Buses 3 and 4 also provide a 10 minute service around the southern perimeter road and campus residences at Alexandra Park (including Cartmel College). Buses X1, 2, 2A and 42 loop around the northern perimeter road en route to the underpass.

Bike

Lancaster was recently a Cycling Demonstration Town (2005-2011) which means it benefited from increased investment in facilities and initiatives for cyclists. It takes 30 minutes or so to cycle from the city centre to campus on the two University signed routes. An off-road cycle route runs from Whinfell Drive in Hala and enters the campus near Bailrigg House. A further off-road signed cycle route runs along the Lancaster Canal to the city centre.

Cycle hire

Cycle hire is available at Leisure Lakes on Penny Street in the city centre.

Car

 

Leave the M6 motorway at junction 33 and take the A6 north towards Lancaster. For Lancaster University main campus – turn right at the third set of traffic lights on the A6 into the University main drive. Take the first exit left from the roundabout at the top of the main drive, then the first avenue on your right. This brings you to the Reception Lodge where security staff will direct you to your destination on campus. For Alexandra Park (including Cartmel College) – turn right at the second set of traffic lights on the A6 into Barkers Drive and turn left at the roundabout into Alexandra Park Drive.

Car parking

Conferees staying in Cartmel College will be issued with parking permits. (Please check visitor parking policy.)
